Choices International Foundation

The Choices International Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening nutrition policy through science-based nutrient profiling.

Established in 2007 following the World Health Organization’s call for enhanced action on the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Foundation is registered in the Netherlands and operates globally. It maintains strict independence from political and commercial interests.

The Choices International nutrient profiling criteria are developed and overseen by an independent international scientific committee. The criteria are systematically revised every four years to reflect evolving scientific consensus and to support continuous food product reformulation and policy alignment.

The Foundation operates with a lean central secretariat and works in partnership with national governments, public health institutes, scientific bodies, and other stakeholders. It provides technical assistance and capacity building to support the development, adaptation and implementation of nutrient profiling systems and related nutrition policies. The Foundation does not accept funding from the food industry such as manufacturers and retailers.

Through this structured and collaborative approach, the Foundation aims to contribute to sustainable improvements in food environments and population health outcomes at national and international levels.

The Choices International Foundation is governed by a international Board that guarantees the independence and credibility of the organisation.

The high quality of the international criteria is the major responsibility of the International Scientific Committee. This Committee operates independently and consists of leading independent scientists in nutrition, food and consumer science from different areas of the world.

The International Secretariat executes and oversees the Choices actions in the different fields of work and different regions of the world. Working on a global level, it is also engaged in the dialogue with international organisations like WHO and many others.
