The 2025 Choices Criteria Published in Nutrients

We are delighted to announce that the 2025 revision of the Choices International nutrient profiling system has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Nutrients. The full paper is available here: https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/18/2/258.

The updated criteria reflect extensive stakeholder consultation, the latest scientific evidence, and recent international policy developments. Key updates include:

  • Equivalence criteria for plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy, ensuring that these products are assessed against the same nutrient standards as their animal-based counterparts.
  • Inclusion of non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) as a component that can lower a product’s health classification and restrict eligibility for a positive front-of-pack label.
  • Alignment of industrially produced trans-fatty acid (iTFA) thresholds with current WHO recommendations, enhancing policy coherence and international relevance.
  • Exploration of whole-grain and micronutrient criteria, which were reviewed but not adopted in this revision pending further evidence and data availability.

These updates strengthen the scientific rigor and global applicability of the Choices system as a tool to support healthier, more sustainable food environments worldwide.
